The United States will send a fact-finding delegation to Myanmar, formerly Burma, as part of an exploratory dialogue with that country’s military junta, the top American diplomat for Asia said Wednesday. “During our trip, we will talk to the Burmese government, representatives of the ethnic nationalities and the democratic opposition, including the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi and others,” the diplomat, Assistant Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He did not say when the delegation would begin the trip. In September, the Obama administration said it would pursue deeper engagement with Myanmar’s military rulers to try to incite democratic reform. Mr. Campbell rebuffed calls by some lawmakers to ease tight curbs on trade and investment in Myanmar, saying at the hearing that the talks “will supplement rather than replace the sanctions regime.”
